About the founder and coach
Sarah Aitken, RN, MS, WHNP/FNP, MHP, NBC-HWC
As a Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner, as well as a Family Nurse Practitioner, a National Board Certified Coach, a functional nutritionist, an Accredited Metabolic Health Provider, a Lifestyle Medicine provider, a wife and a mother, I’m passionate about health. I developed the Diabetes Game Changer program to apply my expertise and experience to helping people—like you and me—who have spent too much time trying to manage their metabolic health (and in my case my weight) by following useless advice.
My personal story:
I never remember a time in my life when I did not struggle with my weight (until the last few years, anyway!). Apparently, I was born wanting to eat - my parents called me “munchy” when I was a baby. The name stuck and I lived that reputation through my entire childhood, and most of my adulthood as well. I was the “fat one” in a family of skinny people, and we all were eating the very same foods.
I developed gestational diabetes with my pregnancy, which I knew meant I had a greater than 50% increased risk of developing diabetes later in life. A few years later, blood tests revealed that I had gone from high normal blood sugars to pre-diabetes. It did not help that I had a huge volume of medical knowledge. It did not help AT ALL to think, “I should know better. Why can’t I do this?”
But when I was diagnosed with pre-diabetes, my new thought was “Hell No. There’s got to be a better way. This ends now.”
And so I embarked on a rigorous investigation of the physiology of obesity and diabetes, as well as the neurological and emotional factors that make sustained change challenging for most of us. I wanted to find the challenges and make them understandable and reversible. I believe I have accomplished that task. It worked for me, and it works for my clients!
I learned two major things: first, how to correct the function of the “obesity” hormones (Insulin, Ghrelin and Leptin) by eating differently (but not by deprivation), and second, that my brain is working exactly as it should, but not in a way that is helping with the problem at hand. The brain can change and so can the body, and there lies the magic. Through an eating strategy that kept my blood sugar and insulin levels low, and with the aid of guided coaching, I transformed my physiology, my neurochemistry and my thought process to support sustainable changes that have led to keeping the weight off.
The incredible combination of correcting the function of my hormones and working on my brain through coaching has allowed me to get the weight off (99 lbs from my all-time high) and to reverse my pre-diabetes completely. I am now on a medical mission to help other people get those same results!
Come work with me. I’d love to help you, too.
